Erin,
I'm in Arizona. It was108 degrees yesterday. I'm headed into a day of acceditation guideline review summit. We are 40 miles out of Tuscon in the desert... rattle snakes and all. Enjoy your day!

Hi Erin,

I love the new pictures...tell Matt I love his beard. He's looking pretty tough!

I'm glad I finally figured out that "DSCF6421.MP4" currently right under your profile is a link to a video. It was hard to find that!!

Erin,

Great to hear that life is way exciting and you and the others are having a "huge" life experience. I'm headed to AZ Tuesday... nothing like Nicaragua but it will be warm! Are you getting all those BPs? Good practice for you future... Dr. McGuinn.

Hi Erin! Thanks for posting your updates! It sounds like everything is going well so far, and I'm glad to hear you are all settling into Granada, and even salsa dancing with the store owners. I can't wait to see some pictures and video! Say "hi" to everyone and keep those updates coming.

Whats the lowdown about your internship?
I'm currently in Granada, Nicaragua, studying the effects of open-pit cooking fires on respiratory health with five other undergraduate students. We're working in a very poor barrio called El Fortin on the outskirts of Granada. One cool thing about my internship is that I am serving as a translator as well as a researcher! New, more efficient stoves with chimneys will be installed throughout the summer in participants' homes, giving them the opportunity to improve their quality of life.
About Me:
I am a senior majoring in Environmental Health with a Spanish minor. I'll be graduating in December 2008, after which I plan on attending medical school (I'm currently applying!) and getting a dual MD/MPH degree, although I will be sad to leave CSU and all the great people here!! I have a passion for Spanish as well as for public health and hope to integrate the two and work as a physician for underserved minority populations within the United States.

Masquerading...

Well, today was a long day because the houses we took down were probably a mile or so apart, and then we had to walk another few miles hanging up equipment. It is looking like we are going to make it to 129 participants…finding people that haven’t participated that want a stove is becoming increasingly more difficult. Maria Teresa located four households for today after searching for quite a while. I told Maria Teresa that she and the other volunteers are becoming famous in our department becaus… Continue

Game plan

Today was the first Sunday we have worked here. We made an exception for one of the women that works in the chicken slaughterhouse because she could not get off of work during the week…Sunday was the only time she could participate. Shauna from the Office of International Programs is visiting this week and arrived yesterday, so today was her first experience in El Fortin. We took her to meet Dona Maria after work. We finished our 109th house today…meaning that we are only 21 away from our goal.… Continue

100 houses

Today we completed measurements at our 100th house!!! It was truly a great feeling for me to see how successful the study has become. I still wake up every day in disbelief that I am getting to do something this incredibly cool for my internship...but it just goes to show that hard work pays off. I never thought a year ago I would be sitting in an internet cafe in Nicaragua getting to write a blog entry about the experience of a lifetime. It is hard to wrap my mind around the fact that six month… Continue

The Corn Islands of Nicaragua

Because we are so ahead of schedule, we decided to take a bit of a long weekend. Tom and Danielle went to the mountains, and Kris (my boyfriend who was visiting) and I went to the Corn Islands, two Nicaraguan islands located in the Caribbean. We had to fly from Managua to Bluefields, a port town on the Atlantic coast, then on to the islands. The plane was an large prop plane…it looked pretty old…it was probably retired from use in the States and then sold to the airline company here. One thing t… Continue
