Today was the last day of orientation-type activities for the SUPEH and CLEH interns. (I am one of the SUPEHs. The CLEH program is for non-EH majors to get experience in environmental health). Our first activity in the morning was a presentation by Dr. Henry Falk. He is the director of the Coordinating Center for Environmental Health and Injury Prevention. Most of his lecture was providing background information on the Coordinating Centers (which actually may go away soon if the new Director reo…

Today I am currently working on editing a rough draft of the environmental Baseline Inventory Report. My process consists of using a template of a similar property that contains some of the same values as the property that the report is being created for. As I edit, I am evaluating topography maps that describe water basin information. This process helps me identify potential ephemeral water areas that could arise in case of a heavy rain. For the water rights, I am going through exceptions creat…

Today was the half way point of my internship with Management Network Resources. I just finished going through a review with Dr. Kross about my performance. I have impressed him with my ability to learn a new job and do it correctly the first time. Essentially, I have shown that I have great computer skills, enthusiastic about the job, interested in learning as much as possible, and other qualities he is looking for. I do have a tendency to ask a lot of questions in regards to what I am doing, a…

I have been working here at EH&S part time since April, and about 2 weeks ago I started working full time. I have learned a lot since I have been here; I work in the biosafety divison, but I have worked on multiple projects with people throughout the department to give me a good taste of what everyone does around here! The divisons of this department are basically the EH classes that we have taken; IH, Health Physics, Emergency Management, Hazardous Waste, Environmental Compliance, etc. I ha…

Hey! I've been in Tallahassee since Sunday night and will be here until tomorrow. I'm here getting my ID, training, and getting acquainted with all the sections under the Environmental Health Division with the help of workers. My supervisor here at the DOH said they're trying to get used to calling us "Environmental Health Aides" instead of "interns" since we're getting paid and are technically employees of the state. Haha, good luck.
One of my biggest fears was driving here from Panama City; t…

Being fairly far into my internship, today is judgment day. All of the work that I have been busy was reviewed by reviewed by Dr. Kross. I have made good progress and have done a variety of things for 5 different reports. The items he reviewed are soils mapping, photographic documentation, tax and property legal information, and mapping of land topography. After inspection, he was happy with my progress thus far. There was some small detail things that I missed, but overall I did an excellent jo…

I started my internship today! I am in two programs simultaneously, which gets confusing. I am primarily in the US Public Health Service’s Junior COSTEP (Commission Corps Officer Student Training Extern Program) with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta as my duty station, but also a part of the CDC’s SUPEH group (Summer Undergraduate Program in Environmental Health). I will be working with the Environmental Health Services Branch (EHSB) in the National Center for Environmen…

This is the start of my 4 week and this internship is really going by fast. It feels like I just started yesterday. There are many new challenges that I am quickly approaching. At this point, I am transitioning from writing significant portions of the reports to doing research about land values, population growth, and uranium mining in Weld County. The research being conducted is meant to add more value to the reports and make them rich with information about the lands worth. The main point of t…

Introduction and Reflections from My First Two Weeks at PVH:
The first two weeks here at Poudre Valley Hospital have been exciting and varied. The labyrinthian hospital and all of the off-site facilities make it a confusing but extremely interesting place to work. I easily walk several miles a day as I canvas the hospital investigating safety or other issues, or simply trying to find my way to meetings.
I have two bosses in the Environmental Health & Safety Department, Claire and Sherry. T…

In the past couple of days, I have been evaluating soil survey maps of Northern Weld County, Co. There is a lot I need to learn before I am an expert on this. Basically, the maps have numbers with contour lines that are labeled with a number corresponding to a description in a manual. The manual provides a thorough description of the soil composition, ability to sustain vegetation growth, livestock grazing capabilities etc. This comprises just one portion of the Baseline Inventory Reports I am w…

Hello to all you peeps in Nicaragua. Sounds like you are having fun but most importantly making a difference. Myself and others are holding down the fort here in Colorado until you get back.
I am working at Hellman and Associates and have spent a good first few days getting to know everyone in teh office and going out in the field to administer some fit tests. I am really excited because all the consultants here work on different issues and all are willing to take me out into the field with the…

We are in the middle of week three of the Nicaragua Cook Stove Project and I can't believe how quickly time has flown by. It seems like there's always something exciting going on, whether that's going out to the field or exploring Nicaragua. There are eleven of us living in a great house (which includes a mango tree) and heading off to El Fortin each day to do research. The women in El Fortin are lots of fun to work with and very understanding and helpful when I try to speak Spanish. My main rol…

Hey you all, just some quick backgroud information: it is always super humid here in Nicaragua and El Fortin (where we do our field work), the birds are really loud and our truck/truck driver that takes us into the field to work is/are amazing. So here is a taste of my thoughts, feelings, experiences and descripitions from my first week in Nicaragua:
Birds are the singing, quacking, crackling, shouting and chattering alarm clocks that pierce through the dense wall of the sticky warm air like a…

Wow, what a week! We have been here for two weeks now and this is absolutely the most amazing and life-changing experience of my life. I have gotten to meet so many people, both participants in the study and other people traveling.
The project is going fairly well. Many of the women are incredibly smart and can easily complete the surveys that we are asking both the primary women in the household and often times a secondary woman who helps out in the kitchen or is also home most of the day. My…

I am currently working at my internship right now on my lunch break posting a blog. My internship is detailed in the about me page. This internship is challenging because it requires extremely high organization skills and planning ahead. I am utilizing a lot of my knowledge from courses I've taken at CSU. I'm currently looking at soil survey maps that describe land usage from past and present. I have a lot to learn in order to master this internship. However, I am on the correct path for doing s…

Hey EH majors,
I hope your summer internships are off to a great start! I can't wait to read more about them! Having been out for maternity leave for most of spring semester, I feel out of the loop and am excited to hear what all of you are doing. So let's get those updates started!

Hi everyone,
Sorry that I haven’t updated in a while—between the internship, horse shows, and life in general, I have been swamped! Here are some happenings of the last month:
•
Drinking water system inspections. The county looks at small drinking water treatment systems for places not hooked to “the grid.” These are often located out of the valley up one of the canyons in the Wasatch. I went on an inspection of a campground in Big Cottonwood Canyon. You check for chlorine levels and ge…

What an internship and what a weekend. I am amazed everyday at the things I am learning from my internship, my boss, my coworkers and my surroundings. This weekend I volunteered at Netroots Nation which was a convention for progressive politics and focused on blogging communication. I volunteered so I could get in free and not have to pay 400 dollars. (I like being a college student sometime) On Saturday morning I went to hear Nancy Pelosi speak and then Al Gore made a surprise visit and talked…

I love this internship more and more everyday! I'm going to be really sad to leave in 4 more weeks...
July projects have included confined spaces (aircraft and non-aircraft) this is a fun project, it's all totally new for me and pretty interesting. It covers entry into spaces that are small/dangerous which may or may not require a permit and identifying them. It's another revamp project that needed updated from the 10 year old data that existed on it. I've been identifying spaces from manholes,…
