Environmental Health Interns

A look into the lives of CSU's Current Environmental Health Interns

Although I'm not doing my internship this summer, I'd like to encourage any EH student (or advisor, hehe) to write a blog! It can be about anything. I guess, I can't encourage others to do it if I haven't written a non-internship blog myself! So here it goes.....
I'm spending my summer in beautiful, hot, southern South Carolina. I happen to live and work on Hilton Head Island (a big tourist area). I'm also a native to the island. One of my many jobs is working as a kayak tour guide, rental person, and phone answer-er. We do sea kayaking, an environmentaly-friendly way to survey the delicate marshland estuaries and brakish rivers that generates the interesting and unique ecology in the lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia. When guiding tours, one story I like to tell is about a goat that recently jumped off of one of our main bridges! The Cross Island Bridge/ Charles E. Fraser Bridge goes over the Broad Creek (where the kayak company launches tours). My neighbor Rett is a firefighter and happend to be crossing the bridge with his crew. When crossing they found a curious situation, a goat and a police officer in a race, circling around a patrol car! He was in a fire truck at the time and decided to close the lanes and stop to help the officer. The goat started running towards Rett, so he waved his arms in panic and the goat jumped off the bridge about 50 feet, safely landing in the pluff mud (a picture below shows the mud in the very bottom). The goat could walk around slowly. After many conflicts in rescuing the goat, including the two firefighters tipping a jetski, a firefighter getting stuck in the mud, and the police boat not working, they finally rescued the goat and the stuck firefighter. A vet checked out the goat and she wasn't injured, just extremly dirty! The goat was adopted, but continally tries to run away! It is surprisng that there are goats in this affluent area, but there are a couple of somewhat rural areas on the island. I just love it when these unusual situations happen, and apprently other people do too, as the story made national news for a day or two.
I hope everyone is having a great summer! Maybe this story will bring a smile to someone!

Oh, was that a call-out Charlotte? Haha, I'll get a blog posted here shortly...once I get a mini-break during Preview, our freshmen orientation. We are in our 2nd of 6 weeks and having a blast. Kayaking guide in Hilton Head...sounds like a great summer! It's great to hear from you! Any fun concerts or festivals for you this summer? We'll be heading to Sam Bush at the Mishawaka on July 12th, and camping up at Ansel Watrous the entire weekend.
