My internship has been keeping me super busy!! All of June was consumed by the factory wide noise survey and in an airplane production facility that's alot of ground to cover. The dosimetery and data collection were the easy part - I had to submit 2 reports to the EHS department (yikes!) and recreate the final assembly factory maps for hearing protection required areas, they were about 15 years out of date. That was my big project and it ended up going really really well!
On top of noise I have also been able to pick and choose basically whatever else I want to take part in. The safety administrators put on weekly TIP walks throughout the wings building (where all the wings for the 737's are built) and in final assembly (where the plane is fully assembled). The TIP walk covers a different topic each week and focuses on talking directly to the employees about that topic as well as any safety and ergonomic concerns they might have. After the walk all the managers and safety admin's sit down together and discuss the past week's injuries/incidents and bring up any new business that employees have identified as areas of concern. This is my favorite thing to do because it's an excuse to be around the planes, it's a great way to get to know all the managers throughout the site, and an interesting approach to industrial problem solving, as well as excellent exposure to the safety side of things.
So far the coolest experience has been the 3rd shift noise monitoring...3rd shift is the quietest time of day, people are still working on the planes, but around 4am they move the planes to the next phase of final assemnbly. The fuselage gets moved to the next position for wings to get attached at the start of 1st shift, a new fuselage gets brought in to be worked on and the planes move to the next assembly area (flow day as they are referred to) for their next phase of assembly. The plane at the end gets put out on the tar mat, where it will then move over to pre-flight and take off when the sun comes up. It's my favorite because they open the huge bay doors at each end of the factory and by the time the process is done the sun is coming up, everything is quiet and the build process starts all over again with a new plane.
