Environmental Health Interns

A look into the lives of CSU's Current Environmental Health Interns

I love this internship more and more everyday! I'm going to be really sad to leave in 4 more weeks...
July projects have included confined spaces (aircraft and non-aircraft) this is a fun project, it's all totally new for me and pretty interesting. It covers entry into spaces that are small/dangerous which may or may not require a permit and identifying them. It's another revamp project that needed updated from the 10 year old data that existed on it. I've been identifying spaces from manholes, to waste water tanks, to the wing join area of the airplane.
There have been a bunch of other projects as well including chromate sampling - there is a massive amount of chrome, MPK, & MEK that are used throughout the wing assembly and final assembly of the airplane. These are the best materials to prevent corosion to the plane and have the least effects on human health over time. Alot familiarization with HazCom and MSDS sheets for this one. IAQ and ventilation systems are another big part of the chromate sampling projects too.
A really interesting project that I'll start next week is going to look at the "strobe" lights that are on the wing tips of the airplane (the flashing lights you can see when a plane is in the air at night) and the effects they have on vision. It will involve measuring all the wavelengths of the different types of light involved, these bulbs produce something like 5 or 6 different varieties.
I've been spending alot of time exploring Seattle and the mountains and the beaches out here. It's been a ton of fun to meet new people and be totally out of my element. There is way more to see and do out here that it's almost impossible to pack it all into the short 12 week time frame, but I've managed to get in as much as I can.
