Environmental Health Interns

A look into the lives of CSU's Current Environmental Health Interns

Hey! I've been in Tallahassee since Sunday night and will be here until tomorrow. I'm here getting my ID, training, and getting acquainted with all the sections under the Environmental Health Division with the help of workers. My supervisor here at the DOH said they're trying to get used to calling us "Environmental Health Aides" instead of "interns" since we're getting paid and are technically employees of the state. Haha, good luck.

One of my biggest fears was driving here from Panama City; the longest I've driven was 1.5 hours and that was once, in Colorado. But hey, I made it ;). Plus, I was still breaking-in my new car on the way here so I was driving like a grandma most of my trip here (that is, until I reached 500 miles on the car!). They put me in a nice hotel, Springhill Suites Marriott. Free breakfast. I feel like a grown-up with all the other government workers that stay in the hotel. Too bad I had to pay upfront for the room until they reimburse me. Wiped out my account and I couldn't use it at Wal-Mart the other night :(

The office, or their "campus", as they like to put it, is less than 4 miles away from the hotel. Convenient. My supervisor is nice and everyone is welcoming. My second in command ;), Tracy, worked at Bay County last year so she gave me the low-down on ALL the people there and any advice she could give me. Apparently, my supervisor at Bay County, Ken, and everyone I'll be working with in my CHD are in the military (Air Force) or retired from it. Figures since it's by Tyndall Air Force Base. She said they're laid back and I will be the only female.

We've calibrated equipment, took temperatures of various cold foods, and were given some hip-looking fanny packs filled with instruments we'll be using for the programs in our counties. P.S. I heard they're EXPENSIVE. I really hope I don't break them.

The other intern picked Leon County as her county since she's attending summer school in Tallahassee's FAMU (Florida A&M). We had fun the couple days we were in the office together. She's originally from New Jersey and kept calling everyone ma'am. I felt so disrespectful calling everyone by their first name that I almost started calling them ma'am and sir as well.

Tomorrow's my last day in Tallahassee, and then they let me loose. I just have some paperwork to finish. Since it takes me 2.5 hours to get back, she's letting me out 2.5 hours earlier to drive back. Good thing Panama City Beach is an hour behind.

I look forward to working in the Summer Food (in conjunction with the FL DOE), Group Care, and Biomedical Waste Programs.

Back to taking advantage of hotel amenities and printing out my mapquest route back to PC tomorrow.
:)
