Today was the first official day of my industrial hygiene internship at Boeing and I loved it!!! My big intern project for the summer will be to conduct noise surveys along the 737 airplane production process. This means I follow the planes through their production process and measure every area that is producing high noise volumes. I'll then have to analyze my data for each employee and determine which of them will be required to take the annual hearing tests in August. My other big intern project will be safety based and deal with confined spaces. For this project I'll get to crawl around inside the wing of an airplane collecting data. A few other ongoing monitoring projects they have will involve indoor air quality, VOC levels at various production points, and overall worker safety. Boeing's Health and Safety team that I'm working with consists of mainly industrial hygienests and safety personnel so there is a wide variety of things going on and alot of cool projects to participate in. Aside from the noise and confined spaces projects, I'll be going on field trips to other Boeing production sites and I'll have many opportunities to choose what other sorts of EH projects I want to participate in.
More importantly however, I have discovered these really cool 3 wheel bikes with baskets on the back that they ride around the factory to deliver tools and parts and such. My goal for the summer is to commandear one of these bikes to haul all my dosimeters and other equipment around in. I can't wait to cruise around the factory on my giant tricycle wearing a hard hat and safety goggles!!!!
