Environmental Health Interns

A look into the lives of CSU's Current Environmental Health Interns

Today was the first day of NEHA! My uniform is finally complete, so I started off my morning by driving to LTJG Cory Moore’s (a relatively new USPHS officer who runs the CLEH and SUPEH programs) house to make sure I had everything good to go. I was so lucky that she was willing to help me out because pretty much everything I had on was askew in some way or another. Cory has been a huge help to me with getting my uniform together and pretty much everything.
NEHA started with the keynote speaker who happened to be Dr. Howard Frumkin, who did our brown bag lunch speech last week. His slide set was actually almost identical to the one he used last week, which made the speech a little bit déjà vu. On the other hand, I will say that he is possibly the most fantastic public speaker I have ever seen. He can go through more slides in an hour than anyone I have ever seen. He manages to be fast, clear, and loud all at the same time. He manages to address climate change without the doom and gloom, which is a fairly difficult feat. He can also change the tone of the presentation without changing any of the content—the brown bag lunch was about what students’ roles should be as new or future public health professionals, while today he fit in Father’s Day and sustainability as our responsibility toward the future. I was very impressed.
I did not attend any of the educational sessions today, but I did go to the Exhibition Opening Party tonight. It was a lot of fun to see all of the businesses involved in environmental health and network with all of the people there. Many were so excited to see students involved at the conference and were eager to share information with us. (However, one of the exhibitors from the EPA through the Public Health Service called me Ensign and I am not used to that yet!) I also ran into Nicole Grisham and a lot of the CEHA crew, which was fun. I also got introduced to a professor from the University of Washington; he’s not from my department but it was still a great and informative conversation, both about the school and Seattle in general.

I tried the other day and Ning wouldn't let me post them... they are on Facebook though (sans the hat/cover because we were inside). I will try again another time!
