So far, creating a rough draft of a Baseline Inventory Report has not been to bad. There are some sections that I have not been taught how to do are giving me a hard time. I am trying to learn about where I need to go to get information about water rights on specific properties, and how to identify certain vegetation that we notated out in the field. I feel that it is better that I try to do these types of things on my own so I can become more independent in a professional atmosphere. That is what I have been doing for the whole internship, but I am finding that some of the things that I have to do will require assistance from Dr. Kross.
Dr. Kross will be gone a couple of days during week 9, so that will give me the opportunity to work in a quiet place and not be bothered by outside distractions. A new skill that I learned only a couple of weeks ago have now mastered is the ability to look at minerals report conducted by a third party. These mineral reports provide excellent information about uranium mining, oil drilling, mineral extraction, and other things that are being done in the vicinity of these properties. If there is an activity on the properties that pertains to this, we must create an exception and exclude this land from the conservation easement. The only thing I have come across currently on the properties is one wind turbine. This creates ownership issues, and Dr. Kross is still waiting to see what we are going to do about it.
I have gone through and edited about 4 complete reports so far, and next I am going to make the changes to the word document and see if I basically get the reports ready to be printed for a final draft. I might not be there yet from an ability standpoint to accomplish this yet, but I am getting closer.
In the next couple of weeks, Dr. Kross is going to send me out into the field so I can take photographic evidence of the last report that we are going to do. I feel that this will not be to difficult since I have been doing well on everything else that has been thrown my way. I will keep everyone updated as to when this happens and what I will have to do exactly.
